We spent many hours researching what competitive brands were doing in the same vertical and why they were doing it.  The market place was crowded and getting more so everyday.  Once we understood the environment we developed the overall brand book, the guidelines, the look and feel and finally got started on the development.  When we were finished there was a new look, a new site and a new CMS.
