mHealth Research in Academia
Clinical Research in the Palm of Your Hand
Challenge
Researchers from academic institutions including, Washington University in St. Louis, Harvard University, Monash University and Northwestern University were looking for groundbreaking ways to advance science within their respective fields by moving their research out of the lab and into the real world. Each having unique requirements and user needs, we created solutions that work throughout the US and Australia.
Solution
We created a mobile app with game-like cognitive tests and precision timing down to the millisecond. The app was an innovative way to more accurately test the cognitive function of patients with Alzheimer’s or Type-II Diabetes outside of the lab.
hM developed an SMS program for a behavioral obesity treatment embedded in mental health organizations serving people with severe mental illness. The content was easy to digest, interact with and did not cause significant interruption in their day to day routine.
To study depression symptomatology in real life, we developed a mobile application. The app captured depression symptomatology in everyday life situations using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) before and after a mindfulness intervention. The aim of the study was to identify trends and patterns of depression per user, to better predict the likelihood of a major depressive episode.
Results
The software we developed continues to be used in a number of capacities by researchers at academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies. These include interactive obesity treatment approach (iOTA) interventions, mindfulness programs in depression research, quality of life interventions for people with stroke, and cognitive testing.
