Bunge
Waste Reduction with Oil Polarity Detection
Challenge
Bunge, a leader in agribusiness, food and ingredients, wanted to understand color-shifts to determine oil polarity, allowing their customers to dispose of oil at the right time.
Solution
We developed a mobile application that normalized the color of oil when customers took a picture of their oil by forcing the camera’s flash. We mapped the color differences to determine polarity and determined the percentage of oil used based on the photographs, which are both the determining factor to throw away used oil. At 30% oil should be discarded and our app was able to determine that within 1%. The Bunge oil app is still in market today.
Results
Bunge used application data to determine product usage trends and when customers needed to reorder oil, which allowed for personalized messaging and increasing sales.
The oil app helped Bunge customers make educated decisions on saving or throwing out oil, saving them money and protecting consumers from consuming bad oil.
Oil customers no longer questioned when oil was bad. The mobile app has helped better the environment and reduce oil waste.
